West Bengal Sabang By Election 2017 Result
- The Trinamool Congress has won the Sabang Assembly seat by-election in West Bengal with 1,06,179 votes, wresting the seat from the Congress.
- The Trinamool had fielded Gita Rani Bhunia, wife of Manas Bhunia, a former Congress MLA who had defected to the Mamata Banerjee-led party earlier this year necessitating the by-election. Bhunia had won the seat in last year's assembly polls.
- The BJP had nominated Antara Bhattacharya, while the Congress has fielded Chiranjib Bhowmick, a local leader. Rita Mandal of the CPI(M) is contesting as a Left Front candidate.
- Gita won by by a massive margin of over 64,000 votes. Her closest rival was Mandal with 41,987 votes. Bhattacharya bagged 37,476 votes to come third while Bhowmick only secured 18,060 votes. Sabang has been a Congress stronghold since 1957.
West Bengal Sabang By Election 2017 Live Voting
- Voting begins for bypolls in West Bengal’s Sabang.

- Voting for the Sabang Assembly began on a dull note today with just 15 percent electorates exercising their franchise in the first two hours, an Election Commission official said.
- The opposition CPI(M) and the BJP accused the ruling TMC of driving away their election agents from the polling booths, an allegation which was denied by TMC leader and Rajya Sabha MP Manas Bhunia.
- “The allegation made by the opposition parties is completely baseless. Voting is going on peacefully in the constituency,” Bhunia said.
- The by-election in West Bengal’s Sabang will be a litmus test for both the ruling Trinamool Congress as well as the BJP, which has been trying to emerge as the principal opposition party in the state.
- TMC has fielded Gita Rani Bhunia as its candidate for the Sabang Assembly seat, which fell vacant after her husband and former Congress MLA Manas Ranjan Bhunia was elected to Rajya Sabha on a TMC ticket, necessitating the bypoll.
West Bengal Sabang By Election Schedule 2017
- By-polls will be held on the 21 December to fill vacancies in the state legislative assemblies of Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Accordingly, the Pakke-Kasang and Likabali (both ST) assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikandra in Uttar Pradesh and Sabang in West Bengal will go to polls on December 21.
- The counting will be held on December 24.
- Antara Bhattacharya is the party nominee in Sabang in West Bengal, according to a party statement.
