Performance of TMC Government in West Bengal over the last 5 years?

Rated as above average with a mean score of 3.5.

Chief Minister, Mamta Banerjee over last five years has been rated as above average with a mean score of 3.6. This is shade better than the rating of the TMC government performance

Here are some observations on the mood of West Bengal:-

There is a degree of satisfaction with the TMC govt. The roads, health care, education, etc. are perceived to be better. The situation is somewhat, if not vastly better than what it used to be during the Left rule.

  • Area where things lag is industrialization. Historically, the state was a leader in industries from British times  but over the years things have changed for the worse. So, in the recent years not much has improved in industrialization. Not sure if people are really so keen on industrialization. Anti-Tata campaign had catapulted Mamata to power.
  • The muscle-men / extortion were there under Left rule and it has continued in TMC rule as well. Maybe, it was not expected from TMC but people are not unused to muscle-men, so it is not a big negative for TMC.
  • INC+Left alliance: After TMC split from INC, the INC area of influence was restricted to North Bengal area. However, Left has a more evenly spread support base in the state. The data seem to suggest that there would be a healthy transfer of votes between the supporters of Left and INC. But, even if transfer of votes happened, the combination is more likely to benefit INC with more seats in North Bengal area but the combination may not be adequate to gather more seats in other parts of the state. Perhaps, this is why Mamata started campaign in North Bengal with much fervor. Had the support base for the two partners evenly spread in the state, the alliance would resulted in many more seats.
  • BJP is not a player in the state as the party does not have grass root level workers or tall Bengali leaders who can rally people around them. The spurt in BJP votes share seen in 2014 was largely support for Modi  and it dropped in KMC elections and even now it is not likely to be much. Moreover, there is a view that Modi and Mamata have a tacit understanding. Since, BJP cannot win in the state, Modi is expected to attack Mamata. This would ensure that her Muslim vote bank stays together rather than split into INC and Left.

So, in view of the above, TMC is expected to retain power.
