BJP Central leadership rejects list, talks with partners on March 22, BDJS,BJP second candidate list,West Bengal bjp second candidate list, West Bengal polls, Jagat Prakash Nadda,Rahul Sinha, Rupa Ganguly

Former state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Rahul Sinha and actor Rupa Ganguly of teleserial ‘Mahabharat’ fame figure among 194 candidates whose names were announced by the party on Thursday for the West Bengal assembly polls.

The BJP’s central leadership on Thursday rejected the preliminary list of candidates its Kerala unit had drawn up for the Assembly poll.

Party central election committee secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda, who was to officially declare the list of nominees for 22 constituencies submitted by a delegation led by State president Kummanam Rajasekharan, has set aside the announcement in New Delhi. P.K. Krishnadas and V. Muraleedharan, former State presidents and K.R. Umakanth, organisational secretary, were present at the election committee meeting, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and national president Amit Shah took part.

“We are reviewing the entire list. Certainly, there will be changes. The list has been prepared without completing the seat-sharing formalities with the alliance partners, including the BDJS. The talks will be held on March 22,” Mr. Nadda said in New Delhi.

On Tuesday, BJP and BDJS leaders had a four-hour meeting in Kozhikode over seat-sharing, which remained inconclusive.

BJP sources said the Central leadership had received several complaints about candidate selection, the methodology adopted, and arbitrary choices of the State committee. Local functionaries, especially in Kasaragod and Thiruvananthapuram, had objected to fielding candidates from other districts.

A section is disenchanted with the possible candidature of both Mr. Rajasekharan and Mr. Muraleedharan, arguing that it was odd for the State president and the election committee convener to be in the fray. Besides, only one name has been proposed for each constituency, giving the impression that State leaders had cornered the main seats. Leaders such as P.P. Mukundan, former general secretary; K. Raman Pillai, former president; and A.G. Unnikrishnan and Ettumanur Radhakrishnan, former secretaries, had been deliberately kept out, the sources said.

The Central unit, it is learnt, is dissatisfied with the State unit’s functioning for multiple reasons, including the ongoing infighting. The RSS had anointed Mr. Rajasekharan as BJP State president to contain factional wars. However his entry had not only failed to douse the factional fires, but had also made it percolate down to the lower rungs of the party, the sources said.
