KOLKATA: Enthused by Wednesday's massive response to the general strike called by central trade unions, West Bengal CPI(M) has urged the state election commission to hold municipal corporation polls for Asansol and Bidhannagar on October 3 when the Siluguri Mahakuma Parishad election will take place.

The election commission on Thursday announced that elections for Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad (SMP) and by-elections for several gram panchayats and panchayat samities will take place on October 3. But it did not announce the dates for Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

CPI(M) expressed displeasure over this and demanded holding polls at these two corporations on October 3.

Response to Wednesday's general strike call the 24-hour general strike called by eleven central trade unions to oppose the Narendra Modi government's labour policy and land bill in Kolkata and the rest of the state and the Left parties' success in mobilising a huge turnout at the Nabanna gherao movement last week seem to have energised CPI(M).

The party now feel that people are responding to its agitation against the Mamata Banerjee government and that it can fare well in the two municipal elections which are considered to be largest polls before next year's assembly elections in West Bengal.

Chairman of the opposition Left Front and CPI(M) Politburo member Biman Bose has written a letter to the state election commission, alleging that the state government was not holding elections to several municipalities such as Kulti, Jamuria and Ranigunj in Burdwan district and Rajarhat-Gopalpur in North 24-Parganas district even though terms of these civic bodies had expired long ago.

"We gave a letter to the municipal affairs minister on May 23, 2014 informing him about the fact that tenure of these civic bodies will be over in June 2014. We also urged the minister to hold polls in these civic bodies. But instead of going for polls, the government had appointed executive officers to run these civic bodies. This is an undemocratic way to run elected bodies," Bose said in his letter.

At the same time, he also urged the commission to hold polls in these corporations on October 3 when elections to the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad will take place.
