UP Polls 2017: Prashant Kishore for Congress in UP given free Hand, UP assembly elections 2016, Lucknow, Prashant Kishore,Uttar pradesh

After the Assam debacle, team Prashant Kishor has decided to do an in-depth study into the credentials and winning prospects of all the potential Congress candidates for the UP assembly elections.

The team has issued fresh directions to all district presidents to ask the potential candidates, who had earlier submitted names and phone numbers of 20 people from their constituency, to now submit a similar list of one person from each booth falling in their respective constituency. This would mean that each candidate would now have to submit names and phone numbers of 300-400 people from their constituency, who would then be interviewed by team PK to ascertain their credentials and winning potential.

The task seems gargantuan as there are over 1 lakh booths in the state and presuming that each of the 403 assembly segments has at least three ticket seekers, team PK would have to deal with a list of over 3.5 lakh names. According to party sources, the aim of this exercise is to ensure that tickets are allotted to candidates who are genuinely connected to people at the ground level.

Party's Agra district president Dushyant Sharma confirmed having received the instructions and said the new lists are to be submitted by June 10. According to party sources, team PK would contact all the people whose names would be mentioned by the candidate and would interview them to know whether they are supporters of the party or not and how they rate a particular candidate. After this initial exercise, member of the team would visit each booth and hold consultations with the people about the credentials and winning prospects of these ticket seekers.

Sources said the team has also sent messages to about 30-40 senior Congress leaders and MPs to identify at least two assembly seats in their respective Lok Sabha constituencies where the chances of Congress victories are high. Once these are identified, team PK plans to fix responsibilities of these leaders to ensure the victory of the party's final nominee from these places.

Ever since Prashant Kishor landed in Lucknow and was given a small space at the party's office in the state capital, his team of around 100 members has spread across the state with an aim to strengthen the party's base at the grassroots level.

Quietly working in 12-hour shifts in nondescript villages and kasbas of the poll-bound state, Kishor's motley crew is an eclectic, self-driven bunch of youngsters out to prove a political point or two. Many of them are fresh graduates from IITs, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and London School of Economics (LSE), while there are others that left fat paying jobs at Google, World Trade Organization, and other MNCs to be part of this political experiment.
