Polls in UP might kick-start in February
Uttar Pradesh Board
of Secondary Education has announced that the exams of the state board for high
school and intermediate will be held from March 1 to March 24 and April 4
respectively.
This is a clear
indication for the Election Commission to complete the electoral process either
before the exams in February or conduct it after the exams in April.
However, the
Commission is keen to hold the UP polls in February, a time during which the polls
in Uttarakhand and Punjab will also be conducted.
Reportedly, the
schedule of holding the elections in Feb is not being preferred by Mayawati´s
Bahujan Samaj (BSP) party, which is currently ruling the state.
Apparently,
completing the entire process of elections by February end is a seemingly
impossible task because the availability of teachers might be difficult during
that time keeping in mind the schedule for practical exams which will begin
from mid Jan and expected to stretch till mid Feb.
Prabha Tripathi,
secretary of UP Board, told a national daily that the Election Commission had
already been notified about the schedule for the exams.
Last year, due to
the census work, the exams of the state board began on March 17 instead of
first week of March, when they generally kick-start, and continued till mid
April.
Earlier there were
reports suggesting that the upcoming elections in the state might be a 9-phase
one thereby continuing in March, if the EC goes for the Feb-schedule.
