BJP candidate begins campaign for Coimbatore Mayor election
Bharatiya Janata Party candidate for the Coimbatore Mayor election R. Nandhakumar on Monday began his campaign from Rathinapuri with the promise to make Coimbatore a smart city. Flanked by office-bearers of his party, and leaders from allies, Mr. Nandhakumar promised that if elected he would work to make Coimbatore a smart city by urging the Union Government to include it in the list of 100 cities proposed for the smart city project.
One another project that he would focus on for easing traffic congestion was introduction of a mass rapid transit project that not only covered the city but also linked Tirupur, Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Palakkad, Erode and Sathyamangalam for easy passenger movement.
He would work to improve the traffic condition in the city by taking steps to build flyovers at important junctions, construct subways for pedestrians at congested places. He would also hasten the computerisation process at the Corporation to such an extent that the city’s residents have a transparent administration.
Towards improving the environment, Mr. Nandhakumar said he would clean the tanks in the city and go in for installing more solar panels. The advantage he had over other candidates was that he would be able to talk to the Central Government to allocate money for projects in Coimbatore and fast track clearances for schemes as he was also from the BJP, he said.
At the launch of campaign, R.R. Mohankumar of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam said the State Government must first explain the circumstances that led to the resignation of S.M. Velusamy as Coimbatore Mayor.
The State Government must also explain why it had not pursued the metro rail project for Coimbatore though the Central Government in 2011 clearly included the city in the list of Tier II cities that were eligible for the mass transit project.
Mr. Mohankumar also lashed out at the AIADMK Government and the AIADMK-led Coimbatore Corporation Council for doing very little for the city.
