Rajya Sabha Polls: Four Congress leaders struggling for nomination from Punjab, Sunil Kumar Jakhar, Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal , Ambika Soni , Rajya Sabha seat ,Punjab Rajya Sabha Polls 2016, Balwinder Singh Bhunder, SAD
Former Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar along with three senior leaders from Delhi- Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal and Ambika Soni are the frontrunners for the Congress share of Rajya Sabha seat from Punjab.
The Rajya Sabha elections are due on June 11. According to sources, Ambika Soni, a sitting member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha, whose term is coming to an end in June, is seeking a renomination. Seven members represent Punjab in Rajya Sabha.
While five berths were vacated in April, three were given to the SAD-BJP alliance and two remained with the Congress, considering the strength of legislators in state Assembly. Terms of two more MPs is coming to end in June. While one of the two seats will go to SAD, the other will be in the Congress kitty. Jakhar, who was removed from the post of CLP leader alongwith former Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, was a contender for a berth vacated last month. He was, however, not rehabilitated while Bajwa, when nominated got the berth.
It was felt that despite being a loyalist of Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh, Jakhar was not given his due. The second seat was given to Scheduled Caste leader Shamsher Singh Dullo.
With Bajwa being a Jat Sikh and Dullo a SC, sources said that the party is looking at a Hindu leader this time for equal representation of all communities in the Rajya Sabha. SAD’s Bhunder to be re-nominated CM Parkash Singh Badal’s aide Balwinder Singh Bhunder is likely to be re-nominated by the party for a Rajya Sabha seat. The term of Bhunder ends on July 4.
Nomination papers are to be submitted soon before the secretary of Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Confirming the decision, cabinet minister Sikander Singh Maluka said, “The decision was taken about a week back and it was a unanimous decision.”
