Shiromani Akali Dal-Longowal (SAD-L) would merge with the Congress ahead of the 2017 polls in Punjab.
"We met (Congress president) Sonia (Gandhi) and (vice-president) Rahul Gandhi (in Delhi on Thursday) and told them people wanted to stop Aam Aadmi Party from gaining power in Punjab,'' said SAD-L chief and ex-Punjab chief minister Surjit Singh Barnala's wife, Surjit Kaur.
"At the same time, Congress also wants to stop SAD, headed by the Badals, from retaining power,'' she said. Her son, Gaganjit Barnala, said they may merge the parties on Saturday when Rahul visits Zirakpur. If not, it may take place in a couple of days.
