About the Constituency:

One of the most politically significant constituencies in the overall political ambience of the country, the Saran parliamentary constituency is one of the 40 Lok Sabha seats allotted to the state of Bihar. The Saran Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 20) has a total of 1,268,338 electorates out of which 580,605 are females and 687,733 are males according to Election Commission of India 2009 reports. 

Following the Delimitation Commission’s order to delimit parliamentary constituencies, this constituency came into existence as recently as 2008, and has Lalu Prasad Yadav as its Member of Parliament, the chief of Rashtriya Janata Dal party. His win in this historic constituency is prominent owing to his massive minority appeal.  

This constituency is situated in the Saran district of Bihar, whose administrative headquarters is located in Chhapra. Six assembly constituencies dot the geography of this Lok Sabha seat, out of which Garkha is reserved for candidates belonging to the scheduled castes

 About Saran:

With a massive population of 39,43,098 people as per the census records of 2011, this district houses a majority that belongs to the scheduled caste category.  

This district was the birthplace of the famous stalwart leader Jayaprakash Narayan, who fought for the rights of the marginalized sections of the society. Besides, this district is remembered in the pages of history, for its tremendous contribution to freedom movement against the British. The Saran district has been identified as one of the 250 economically backward districts of the country, and thus being funded under special governmental schemes such as the Backward Region Grant Fund Programme.
