About the Constituency:

The Daman and Diu constituency, which came into existence in 1987, will witness its 9th Lok Sabha elections in the upcoming polls. The Union Territory of Daman and Diu, which has just one parliamentary constituency, goes to polls on 30 April, 2014. 

The second smallest Union Territory of India, Daman and Diu, is represented by a single parliamentary constituency. According to the Election Commission of India 2014 data, Daman and Diu has over 10,22,00 voters of which 51,665 are females and 50,595 are males.

The territory constitutes an area of 112 sq. km. The capital of the territory is Daman. As per the Indian census data of 2011, the overall population of close to 2,43,000. Males constitute a 52% male majority of the population, while females constitute 48%. The main languages spoken here are Gujarati, Marathi and English.

Political Background:

Currently ruled by the BJP under the leadership of Lalubhai Patel, the Congress will look to make a comeback in this constituency.

 Since its formation, the incumbent BJP has seen three general election victories, while Congress has seen four wins.

Tandel Devji Jogibhai, who won the 1989 general elections as an independent, joined forces with the BJP and went on to win the 1991 and 1998 elections for the party.

 As far as Congress is concerned, the party has been successful under the leadership of Tandel Gopalbhai Kalyanbhai and Patel Dahyabhai Vallabhbhai in the past.

Key issues:

Daman and Diu is not only known for its agriculture, animal husbandry and forestry, but is also recognized for its tourism industry. The people of this Union Territory will hope the party, which comes to power, will keep the flourishing industrial economy in mind and help growth in the same. Nationwide campaigning for BJP includes development of infrastructure, utilities and services. Congress' campaign revolves around its success in RTI, Food Security Bill, women empowerment and its aim of opening up the system to the common people. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) election campaign in the country is based on its anti-corruption movement.
