Narendra Modi's key aide Amit Shah is the New BJP President

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's key aide Amit Shah was on Wednesday named as the Bharatiya Janata Party President after the party's Parliamentary Board met to nominate him. Modi's most trusted lieutenant is now in-charge of the organisation.

Amit Shah started his political career with the youth wing of the BJP and came in touch with Modi when the latter was deputed in Ahmedabad by the RSS in 80s'. During Keshu Bhai Patel's regime, with Modi wielding great influence in the Gujarat BJP, Shah was nominated to contest Sarkhej by-election at a young age of 34. He won and when Modi became the chief minister of the state almost five years later, Shah was a minister holding as many as 12 portfolios.

But trouble started for Amit Shah when he was named and arrested in the Sohrabuddin and Tulsiram Prajapati case. He got bail later, but was barred from entering Gujarat for almost two years. Finally, Shah got a reprieve just before the last assembly polls, when he was permitted to visit Gujrat and contest polls which he confortably won.

But the real fillip to his career were the 2014 General Elections. Just before the elections, he was made in-charge of UP where turned the table of the Opposition to register an emphatic victory with the BJP winning 73 out of 80 seats in alliance with Apna Dal.

That perhaps was the crucial factor which went in his favour when the BJP and RSS were zeroing in on the new party President to replace Rajnath Singh who has joined the government.

Shah was last week accorded a 'Z-plus' category security by the Home Ministry following high threat perception, official sources said. The BJP leader, who was instrumental in the party's landslide victory in Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha elections, has so far been under the security of Gujarat Police.
