Bhartiya Janata Party in fix over party face in poll-bound states
The BJP seems to be having trouble deciding the party’s face who would lead them in the three election-bound states of Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand later this year. The party also has to choose a state chief for Delhi, which may go in for a re-poll if the BJP doesn’t form the government. “A decision on the leadership issue will be taken by the new president of the party, who will take over soon,” a senior BJP leader said, adding that the state unit president may not necessarily be the party’s CM candidate for the assembly elections. The BJP had won all 7 Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, 23 out of 25 contested seats in Maharashtra, 7 out of 8 contested seats in Haryana and 12 out of total 14 seats in Jharkhand. For Maharashtra, transport Minister Nitin Gadkari seems the obvious choice after Gopinath Munde died in an accident last month. But Gadkari seems averse to returning to state politics. He also shares a better rapport with MNS Chief Raj Thackeray than Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray, an ally of the BJP.
There is a clamour within the party to snap ties with the Shiv Sena and expand their base by putting up candidates in all the 288 seats. The BJP had put up candidates in 119 seats and Shiv Sena in 160 seats. Also Read: Haryana 2009 Assembly Election Result
“Even if we get a single seat more than Sena, the BJP will claim the CM’s post,” a Union minister from the said, adding. Then, the tug of war in Haryana has allegedly upset Prime Minister Modi. He told Haryana leaders at a dinner at the BJP headquarters that any tussle for CM’s post may wither away the gains made in the state.
There is a demand for a non-tribal CM in Jharkhand, has seen former CM and party’s tribal face Arjun Munda visiting Delhi often. Dr Harsh Vardhan’s exist from state politics has created a void in the Delhi BJP. Sources have claimed that efforts are on to form a government with the help of turncoat Congress MLAs.
