PM’s austerity drive, no new cars for ministers, PMO to observe expenditure
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked all the ministers to refrain from buying new cars; possibly it’s in a move to bring in austerity in his government. Modi, whose working style had garnered headlines since he took over as the Prime Minister of India which is less than a month of assuming office, has also asked the ministers to take PMO's approval for any purchases above Rs 1 lakh, according to sources. The Narendra Modi-led NDA government is receiving criticism for raising prices of essential commodities like sugar and also hiking the railway fare. This move seems to be an attempt by the Prime Minister to empathize with the general public who are already reeling under severe price hike.
Maiden official visit to Bangladesh Sushma Swaraj reached for 2-day visit
On Wednesday night on her first official visit abroad after becoming External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj arrived in Dhaka. She will hold talks with the top leadership including Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheik Hasina on key bilateral issues including Land Boundary Agreement, proposed Teesta river pact and illegal immigration. Sushma arrived in Dhaka for the two-day visit accompanied by Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh and other senior officials. Ahead of her visit, Swaraj spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the two-day trip.
Implementation of Food Security Act extended by 3 months
In an meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Food and Supplies Minister Ram Vilas Paswan today announced that the implementation of National Food Security Act has been extended by three months. The announcement came after the PM called a meeting with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh and Paswan to discuss inflation. Paswan added, "I will meet state food ministers on July 4. Identity criteria for Food Security Act beneficiaries will be decided by states."
Modi invites Bangladesh counterpart to visit India
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday handed over a letter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, inviting her to visit India. Swaraj called on Hasina to discuss key bilateral issues. According to the sources, they discussed trade and investment, security, connectivity, and border management, among other issues. Bilateral issues between the two countries came up for discussion during the meeting, which lasted for about one hour. Earlier in the day, Swaraj met Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali.
Modi regime's 1 month: Some tough decisions, many challenges remain
Newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government completed its first month in office on Thursday. In the past month the government has been praised for measures like forming an SIT on black money but it has also been in the line of fire for a sharp hike in railway fair announced ahead of the budget. Prime Minister Modi, in the past one month, has been firm on keeping a check on the ministers in the government and is keeping a hawk eye on the expenditure by his ministers as he tightens the belt. He is believed to have instructed all his ministers to refrain from buying new cars as part of his austerity measures. He is also said to have asked the ministers to take PMO's approval for any purchases above Rs 1 lakh.
Finance, Agriculture, Food Ministers meets PM to discuss price rises
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called a meeting with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan to discuss inflation. Sources say the agenda is to prepare the contingency plans in case of a monsoon deficit. The sowing has not even started in most parts of India due to shortage of rain. The monsoon, which was late by almost a week, has been good in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and South interior Karnataka.
