Union rural development minister Gopinath Munde dies in road accident
Union rural development minister Gopinath Munde died on Tuesday in a hospital in New Delhi after meeting with a road accident. Munde was on his way to the airport when his car met with an accident at 6.30am in the Moti Bagh area of the capital."When Munde was brought to the emergency, there was no spontaneous bleeding, no cardiac activity, no pulse," said a doctor at the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center of AIIMS. Munde was brought to the hospital by his personal assistant and driver, the doctor said.
Munde, who had collapsed in the car after the accident, was declared dead at 7.20am by the doctors at the trauma centre after 50 minutes of trying to resuscitate him. His post-mortem will begin shortly and his body will be handed over to his relatives after that, the doctor told reporters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to Munde's family and hailed him as a "true leader".
President Pranab Mukherjee also condoled Munde's death.Home minister Rajnath Singh too tweeted his condolences and said he was a grassroots leader and known for his concern for the poor people and farmers."Mundeji's death is an irreparable loss to the BJP and he has left a big void in Mahrashtra's political and social life," Singh posted.
Union minister Nitin Gadkari told reporters Munde was on his way to the airport in an Ambassador car and the accident happened at around 6:30am. "It is a very sad moment for all of us here in the BJP as well as the government," said Gadkari.
The funeral will take place on Wednesday in his village Beed in Maharashtra. Munde's body to be taken to the BJP headquaters where party workers will pay their respects, Gadkari said.
He was deputy chief minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and elected twice to India's Lower House of Parliament in 2009 and 2014. He had served as deputy leader of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Parliament.
