Akali Members in MCD House Resign over Mayor Choice
Nomination for the post of mayor and deputy mayor took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when five Akali Dal councillors in MCD resigned with complaints that they were not consulted before BJP nominated Mukherjee Nagar councillor Rajni Abbi for mayor. The members of Akali Dal, which is in alliance with t he Bharatiya Janata Party, decided to resign so as to force the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to hold bye-elections.
The MCD has five councillors from Akali Dal and one of them, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, said that they were not even told about the decision.
“We may be a very small group but it does not mean that we deserve no respect. Despite being in alliance with us, BJP never consulted us. This was the final insult and so we have resigned,” Sirsa said.
Dissident councillor Narain Singh from BJP, the ruling party, also filed his nomination papers, although his party had already presented Abbi as their candidate. Savita Sharma from Congress, the opposition, also filed her papers for the post of mayor.
For the post of deputy mayor, Anil Kumar Sharma of BJP and N Raja of Congress filed their papers.

With the Delhi BJP declaring party candidates for the two top posts of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, first-time councillors Rajni Abbi from Mukherjee Nagar ward and Anil Kumar Sharma from RK Puram ward are going to be next Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi, respectively.
While Abbi is considered to be the choice of State BJP president Vijender Gupta, Anil enjoys the patronage of Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra. Sources said the party was not in a mood to repeat the present councillors in the offices — Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney and Deputy Mayor Rajesh Gehlot and thus they have been shown the door.
Earlier, several names were doing rounds for the post of Mayor including Leader of House Subhash Arya, Jagdish Mamgain, Meera Agarwal and Rajesh Gehlot. Though, the party has decided to give extension to Standing Committee chairman Yogender Chandolia and Deputy Chairman Sarita Chaudhary with their current responsibilities. The announcement of names for Mayor and Deputy Mayor has come as surprise for many corporators, as she joined the party in 2007.
Abbi entered the politics in 2007. First-timer Abbi — a law professor in DU — was awarded a party ticket from Mukherjee Nagar ward instead of her husband when it was declared a reserved seat for a woman candidate. Almost six months ago, she was made Delhi BJP’s vice-president. She will become the 25th Delhi Mayor and the eighth woman who will be given the top post of the MCD.
