BJP thinks to declaring Lok Sabha candidates.
NEW DELHI: In the latest attempt to contain infighting, particularly among senior leaders, BJP's national leadership has floated an informal proposal to declare seven candidates for parliamentary seats along with the list of 70 candidates for assembly polls. The proposal has a rider saying no one who contests assembly polls would be allowed to field his name for the 2014 general elections.
The suggestion has created ripples in the party with senior leaders largely opposing it and the younger lot trying hard to ensure it is implemented.
Sources say party's senior leaders, in a recent meeting, had sought suggestions on the proposal saying it can help in settling at least seven senior leaders who may contest as MLAs now and later seek a ticket for parliamentary elections. With party's two back-to-back internal survey showing BJP on a stronger foot this time than 2008, the proposal has not gone too well with the senior leaders who are keen to secure position first as an MLA and leave the parliamentary list for later.
"In politics, things change till the last. Who knows what will be the situation five months from now? The move looks more like a gimmick to trap a few leaders and is unlikely to be implemented," said a senior leader.
However, the buzz has come as a hope for young leaders, largely sitting councillors, who view this as an opportunity to get MLA ticket. "With this move, senior leadership believes that once seven senior leaders will be declared candidates for parliamentary seats, they would help the 10 MLAs falling under their constituency win their seats. Also, this will help younger faces get a chance to fight as MLA while seniors are elevated," said a BJP leader. The younger lot has even started floating names of candidates to create a confusion.
In the last polls, two sitting MLAs - Jankpuri MLA Jagdish Mukhi and Tughlakabad MLA Ramesh Bhiduri- and two sitting councillors-Vijender Gupta and Meera Kawaria - had first contested as MLA and municipal polls and later managed to bag the MP ticket. Besides several senior leaders like Dr Harsh Vardhan, Arti Mehra, Pravesh Verma were also in the race for the MP ticket till the end. Party's state president Vijay Goel had also contested Lok Sabha in 2008 from the New Delhi seat.
