Elections for Bhopal civic body to be held in December

Elections for Bhopal civic body to be held in DecemberElections for Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and four other municipal corporations will be held in last week of December, while elections for remaining municipal corporations, including Indore, will be held in November.

Elections for urban local bodies and panchayats in the state will be held in six phases, said state election commissioner R Parasuram at a press conference on Tuesday.

Giving details about the local body elections in Madhya Pradesh, Parasuram said that in the first phase elections would be held in 11 municipal corporations, 62 municipalities and 208 municipal councils in November. Notification for these elections will be issued after Diwali. Seven local bodies - four municipal corporations, two municipalities and one municipal council - will go to elections in December. The November elections will be held in two phases.

Elections for some of local bodies such as Ujjain will be held completely out of phase, said the state election commissioner. Overall, 90 local bodies - one municipal corporation, 35 municipalities and 54 municipal councils - won’t go to elections with this schedule due to different reasons, he said.

Though the state election commission did not announce the dates of elections, but reports say that the elections for the first phase may take place between November 15 and 25, while second phase elections may be organised between December 26 and 31.

Parasuram said that for the first time EVMs would be used in MP to conduct local body elections. 51,000 control units and 1,53,000 ballot units have been bought from Electronics Corporation of India Limited to conduct the elections smoothly.

"These machines are improved version and smarter than the EVMs used for Lok Sabha and assembly elections. Tracking of each EVM would be done," said Parasuram. Two booklets have also been published to bring awareness among voters and contenders.
