BHOPAL: Shivraj Singh Chouhan is not only likely to retain power in Madhya Pradesh, but to improve his party's already dominant position in the state assembly by securing a two-thirds majority, according to an opinion poll done for a TV channel.

The poll, done by AC Nielsen for ABP News, projects that the BJP will win 155 of the 230 seats in the assembly, leaving the Congress a distant second with 65 seats. For the BJP, this would mean an increase of seven seats from the 2008 tally, while the Congress tally would be down by one from five years ago.

Interestingly, this is despite the fact that the Congress' vote share is predicted to be slightly better than in 2008, up from 32.1% to 33%. The BJP's vote share too is projected to rise from 37.9% last time to 41% in the current elections.

However, given the fact that Uma Bharti's Bharatiya Jan Shakti Party had notched up a 4.9% vote share last time and has since merged with the BJP, this actually represents a decrease of about 1.8% in the vote share of the merged entity.

The survey found that 55% of respondents rated Chouhan's performance as chief minister as 'very good', an approval rating significantly better than that of his government. A general perception of Chouhan being a clean leader also seems to be working in the BJP's favour according to the poll.
