Foul mouth netas in Chouhan cabinet: When polls reached new low at hustings.

BHOPAL: Our netas scream from the podium, raise the pitch against rivals, indulge in rhetoric and even take political discourse to its nadir. Below-the-belt attacks are now common political tactics, but politicians in Madhya Pradesh even hurl abuses at public rallies — mouth filthy, uncouth words without even a pretention of shame. Never mind, they want to be people's representatives of the world's largest democracy.

Of 55 MLAs of Madhya Pradesh who have declared criminal cases against them, 30% have been charged with obscene acts and songsa, including two current ministers in the state cabinet.

As per findings of a report published by National Election Watch(NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), 17 MLAs, including two ministers have been booked at different police stations for 'uttering obscene words in public places' under Section 294 of IPC.

Details of MLAs have been compiled by NEW and ADR on basis of affidavits submitted by candidates themselves to Election Commission.

Industries and IT minister Kailash Vijayvargiya and animal husbandry and minority welfare minister Ajay Vishnoi have the pride of place in the long list of tongue waggers. The former has a history of putting his foot in the mouth at public gatherings, the latest being taking on the EC over the model code.

Vishnoi on the other hand also has a string of controversies surrounding him. He had to tender his resignation in the wake of alleged medicine purchase scam by the state health department after Income Tax department raided his brother's premises. Also, last year, a waqf board member accused Vishnoi of seeking sexual favours to cancel his transfer.

In some cases leaders like BJP MLA from Jabalpur Harendra Jeet Singh 'Babbu' informed the commission that he was booked on charges of 'uttering obscene' words in public at three different police stations of the city.

Tarun Bhanot, the Congress candidate who contested against Babbu in 2008 elections told TOI, that Babbu had printed certain 'objectionable advertisements' in newspapers against him. "In the coming elections, if I am given a ticket, I will remind people of his misdeeds," he said.

Congress MLA from the Chambal area Adal Singh Kansana won the Sumawali constituency in Morena district in 2008 by a margin of 9,651 votes. He also won the 1993 and 1998 polls with 8,700 and 4,900 votes. He has also been charged with obscenity besides rioting, unlawful assembly, assault and criminal force.

Moti Kashyap, BJP MLA from Barwara in Katni has also been accused of selling a minor for prostitution, besides mouthing obscene words in public.

Similarly, Geeta Bhagat, Congress contestant from Barwara in 2008 recounted how Kashyap was disrespectful of women and also had a fake caste certificate. "The party should have a neutral outlook before giving such scamsters tickets," she said.

Of the 17, eight MLAs are from the BJP followed by six of the Congress, a close second.

Both BSP MLAs from the state from Rewa district - Rajkumar Urmaliya and Ram Garib Kol also have cases under obscenity charges.
