The politically crucial and cash-rich Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election will be held on February 21.
Political parties are gearing up for the elections even as fissures in the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance are visible. A total of 2,275 candidates, which include 1,190 males, 1,084 females and one transgender, are in fray for the 227 seats of BMC. According to the final list, released by the electoral department of the BMC, 13 political parties will slug it out to make it to the power corridors of the cash-rich civic body. Counting of votes will be done on February 23.
13 parties have altogether fielded 2,024 candidates, whereas 717 candidates are fighting as Independents. The only third gender to have filed the nomination is from the ward number 166 (Kurla Bus Depot to Sakinaka).
Shiv Sena is the only party which has fielded candidates on all the 227 seats across the metropolis, while Congress will fight it out on 221, BJP on 211, MNS on 201, NCP on 171, BSP on 109, Samajwadi Party on 76 followed by first-timers Hyderabad-based AIMIM on 56 seats.
Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections for BMC declared for 21st February and counting on 23rd Februrary. Election Code of Conduct will come into effect immediately. Limit for election spending is Rs. 5 lakh per candidate.

The BJP today started its campaign for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, just a day after the Shiv Sena started its campaign.
The Saffron Party started its campaign soon after paying tribute at the Maharshtra Martyr's Memorial in the Hutatma Chowk of south Mumbai. All 195 candidates of BJP, along with party MLAs and MPs from Mumbai were present at the Chowk.
