The Shiv Sena will contest 200 seats on its own in Uttar Pradesh in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Announcing this at a press conference here on Wednesday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said that party chief Udhav Thackeray would launch the campaign by attending Ganga aarti in Varanasi soon.
Varanasi is the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Shiv Sena’s presence in the elections is bound to dent the BJP since both share the same vote bank.
Mr Sanjay Raut, interestingly, praised UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and said he was a youth leader who had worked for development of the state.
Mr Raut, however, said that there would always be question mark on the SP and its dynastic rule.
Raut said, “We are looking to contest all state legislative assembly elections to be held next year. In Uttar Pradesh, we have decided to contest 200 seats. We have a strong cadre in the state and have been polling votes.”
Raut said he has been holding meetings with former legislators and MPs across parties in Uttar Pradesh over Tuesday and Wednesday and many of them are keen on contesting from the Shiv Sena.
The Sena leader said his party is aiming to win 25 to 30 seats in the crucial state elections. “Whoever has the backing of the people of UP makes it to the seat of power,” he said.
