Civic Poll 2015: Most criminal, rich candidates in NMMC civic polls belong to NCP
Mumbai : The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has given the most number of candidates who have criminal cases against them and have properties worth crores of rupees in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections, according to the information compiled from the affidavits filed by the candidates before the Election Commission.
Delhi-based voluntary group Association for Democratic Reform (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 537 candidates out of 568 candidates who are contesting in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Elections of 2015.
They found that out of the 537 candidates analysed, 53 (10%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. As many as 40 (7%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, communal disharmony etc.
NCP tops the party-wise list of candidates with criminal cases. NCP has given tickets to 17 out of 101 (17%) candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits. They are followed by Shiv Sena who have 11 out of 61 (18%) candidates with criminal cases against them. Congress has 7 out of 85 (8%), while BJP has 5 out of 42 (12%) candidates with criminal cases in their affidavits.
NCP also tops the list of candidates with serious criminal cases. Their 12 out of 101 (12%) candidates have serious criminal cases against them in their affidavits. Here also Shiv Sena follows them with 7 out of 61 (12%). Congress has 5 out of 85 (6%) while the BJP has 4 out of 42 (10%) candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Out of 172 independent candidates 11 have declared criminal cases against themselves and 10 out of them have serious criminal cases against themselves.
NCP’s 59 out of 101 (58%) candidates are crorepatis, while the number is 38 out of 61 (62%) for Shiv Sena, 27 out of 85 (32%) for the Congress and 24 out of 42 (57%) for the BJP. The average assets per candidate analysed for the NMMC elections is Rs.2.51 crore.
Here Congress tops the list with an average of Rs 4.23 crore of assets with their 85 candidates analysed. The next is Shiv Sena where 61 analysed candidates have average assets worth of Rs 4.20 crore. 42 of BJP candidates analysed have average assets worth of Rs 3.51 crore, while the average assets per candidate for 101 of NCP candidates is Rs 3.29 crore.
Out of the 537 candidates analysed, 201 (37%) are crorepatis and 24 have declared assets worth more than Rs 10 crore, while 2 candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 100 crore.
