‘Villagers have asked mayor to contest civic elections’

NAVI MUMBAI: Speculations are rife over Naik family's representation in the ensuing civil poll due on April 22. City mayor Sagar Naik is contemplating fighting the poll on the insistence of villagers as flag bearer of Naik clan despite Ganesh Naik had last year declared that no one from Naik family will enter the civic election fray in order to pave the way for other party workers. But this last minute change of mind in the Naik's camp has surprised many in the political circuit.

Talking to TOI on the sidelines of preparing list of NCP candidates, former MP and NCP poll panel head Sanjeev Naik said, "The villagers are keen to see somebody from our family leading the party from the front in the house of representative in civic body as has been the case of last 20 years. Being the original inhabitants of Navi Mumbai they need someone close to them to represent the villagers in the house. And we are considering their demand to come out with a decision soon."

Prior to the state assembly election, former guardian minister Ganesh Naik had announced that no one from his family would contest the civic election in order to encourage other party functionaries. But pressure is being built over the candidature of mayor Sagar Naik from various quarters. "We need Sagar Naik to compete the election not to continue the legacy but as a young and educated leader who can inspire the generation next," said Gangaram Patil, a Diva villager.

Sagar Naik has been entrusted a most challenging task to spearhead the poll campaign in Belapur constituency while Airoli MLA Sandeep Nail will look after the poll prospect in Airoli assembly seat. When asked Sagar Naik said, "My name has cropped up in the 11th hour and a final decision will be made in the next two days."
