Congress hints at going alone in Maharashtra as seat sharing tussle with NCP continues
Mumbai: The seat sharing tussle bet ween the Congress and National Congress Party continues to rock the Maharashtra Assembly elections. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has hinted at Congress contesting alone in the upcoming polls if a consensus is not reached.
The remarks came after Chaven held a late night emergency meeting with senior Maharashtra Congress leaders. He has said that a contingency plan has been put in place and that candidates have been finalised for almost all of the 288 seats in the state. He added that he will be meeting NCP leaders on Tuesday morning to reach a final decision. The Congress has refused to meet the NCP's demand of 144 seats, saying they can give only 124 seats to its ally.
Chavan said, "There is no finality about the alliance and time is running short. A few of us will meet senior leaders in the NCP to take the alliance talk further. I called Praful Patel and informed him that our process of the main 174 seat candidate selection and the contingency for remaining 114 is almost getting over. The contingency plan for all candidates in all seats is in place."
Senior NCP leader Praful Patel said that the Congress should consider their demand of giving them more seats. He said, "The Chief Minister called me yesterday night and this morning. The Congress has told us we will sit together and discuss seat sharing. Our party president, Ajit Pawar, Bhujbal and I will discuss all issue with Congress. The party should consider our demand for more seats over and above NCP share of 124 seats."
