A Gram Panchayat, City Corporation, Mahanagar Palika or Mahanagar Nigam is a local government in India that administers urban areas with a population of more than one million. The growing population and urbanization in various cities of India were in need of a local governing body that can work for providing necessary community services like health care, educational institution, housing, transport etc. by collecting property tax and fixed grant from the State Government.
Uttarakhand Gram Panchayat Election Details
The state election commission on Tuesday announced the schedule for the panchayat elections to be held in 7,657 villages in 12 districts of Uttarakhand.
State election commissioner Subardhan said, "The elections will be held in three phases on June 18, June 21 and June 24 in all the districts, except Hardwar where it will be held afterward. All the preparations have been done at the village level in all the districts."
All the arrangements like ballot-boxes, manpower and security personnel have been made. Explaining the breakup of the posts at village and block level, Subardhan said, "The election will be for 7,657 posts of Pradhan and deputy pradhan, 49,337 posts of gram panchayat members, 3,054 posts of block development committee members and 12 Zila panchayat chairman posts."
Thousands of contestants are expected to fight the panchayat polls which bring a festival type atmosphere in villages.
