About Parliamentary Constituency:

Once identified as a downmarket habitat for Delhiites, Trans-Yamuna since then has transformed into being one of the most sought-after addresses in the national Capital. The ever-expanding horizons of this area, located across the river, led to a population boom, which further resulted in its bifurcation into two parliamentary constituencies, namely, East Delhi and North-East Delhi. Marked by scores of group housing societies and JJ colonies, East Delhi got a major facelift due to the Commonwealth Games, 2010.

Demographic Background:

With a vote share of about 10 per cent, the Poorvanchalis (migrants from Eastern UP and Bihar) form the biggest regional group here. However, with continuous migration of people in this region, there has been a gradual change in the dynamics of voting pattern here. The East Delhi parliamentary constituency now has 15.70 per cent Muslims, 14.35 Punjabis, 14.82 per cent SCs, 12.45 per cent OBCs, 11 per cent Brahmins, 11-12 per cent migrants from UP and Bihar, 9 per cent Baniyas, 6.74 per cent Gujjars, 3 per cent Sikhs and 1 per cent South Indian voters.

A major part of East Delhi falls south of the GT Road in Trans-Yamuna but also spreads to the West of the Yamuna covering posh areas like Jangpura and Okhla. It not only contains a large number of group housing societies, DDA flats and upscale colonies, but also has over 100 unauthorised regularised colonies.
