Bengaluru Records 45% Turnout

7pm: Bengaluru records 44% turnout

5.59 pm (IST): Till 4 pm, the voter turnout across Bengaluru was 38%.

3pm: 25.6% voter turnout till 3pm.

1:35pm: About 21% (15.5 lakh) citizens have cast their vote till 1:30pm.

1:22pm: Four people were reportedly arrested for distributing cash to voters at Jeevanbhima Nagar. An amount of Rs. 2.01 lakh was seized, The Hindu reported.

12:30pm: Low voter turnout till 12:30pm. 

11:45am (IST): 10.83% voter turnout in Bengaluru Central, 12.22% in Bengaluru South, 10.27% in Bengaluru North, 8.67% in Bengaluru Rural.

Voting Timings:

Voting began at 7 AM as voters in different parts of the city gradually marched towards the polling booth in their areas. Despite late night showers in the city and drizzle in the morning, voters are showing enthusiasm to come out and vote. The voting will go on till 5 PM.

11.25 AM:  For many, this is the first election in which they are eligible to vote.

11 AM: BJP protests in Bilekahalli as Congress workers allegedly stopped a citizen from voting. Cops on the spot.

Polling will be held at 6,463 booths spread over 197 wards across the city from 7am to 5pm on 22 August and re-polling, if needed, will be conducted on 24 August. Counting will be done on 25 August.

Around 7.4 million (73,88,526) voters are registered to exercise franchise for electing their civic representatives. A total of 9,310 election voting machines and 11,635 ballot units are being used in the polls.

Apart from the Congress and BJP, JD(S), MIM, SP, BSP, CPI, CPI (M) are also in the fray, along with good number of independent candidates.

Total number of polling stations for BBMP elections is 6,733 for 71,80,027 voters, the State Election Commission said, adding that Electronic Voting Machines is being used for the polls and 32,176 election staff are on duty.

A total of 1,121 candidates are in the fray. One candidate from BJP has already been elected unopposed.

9:51 am: Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda rushed to Jeevanbheema Nagar police station and held a flash protest alleging police harassment of JD(S) candidate Ayesha Begum and other party workers. Additional commissioner P. Hrisekhran and other senior police officials rushed to the spot and convinced him to withdraw the protest.

9:50 am: Till 9 a.m. about 2.65 lakh have voted, reports Bageshree.

9:45 am: Youth died after a tree branch fell on his head while he was going to cast vote in Shivaji Nagar. Fayaz, 22, a voter in Ward No. 92, succumbed to injuries after a tree branch fell on him near the polling booth.

9:42 am: In Ward 53 a rowdy sheeter has been fielded. "K.R. Puram has become goondapuram after the new congress MLA Byrathi Basavaraj has taken over," says Nandish Reddy, former K.R. Puram MLA from BJP.

10.43 a.m. Only 97 people have voted so far in Shantalanagar ward, out of which 51 are women.

8:00 a.m. : Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu casts his vote.

7:00 a.m. : Voting started in Bengaluru at 7am.
