Lalu Prasad’s RJD splits as 13 MLAs quit party; rebels likely to join Nitish’s JD(U)
In a setback to Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) split on Monday as the 13 MLAs broke away from the party.
The rebel legislators may join Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United JD(U).
The 13 MLAs, including five belonging to the minority community met at the residence of party MLA Samrat Chaudhary and wrote a letter to Speaker Uday Narayan Chaudhary withdrawing allegiance from the RJD and expressing support to the Nitish Kumar government.
RJD MLA Javed Iqbal Ansari confirmed that 13 party MLAs wrote to the Speaker withdrawing their allegiance from the RJD and expressing support to the JD(U) government of Nitish Kumar.

However, the RJD did not confirm the reports of the division in the party. RJD chief Lalu Prasad ruled out the split saying he has no idea about the development.
The break-away group needs two more MLAs to be declared a new party and can escape provisions of anti-defection laws. There are strong possibilities of two more RJD MLAs joining the rebel leaders to complete the required number for forming a break-away group.
Sources said at least half of the RJD legislators would either be given Lok Sabha tickets by JD (U) or they might be made minister in upcoming cabinet expansion by Nitish Kumar. JD (U) has 116 MLAs and has support of four Congress MLAs and as many independent MLAS in the House of 243.
The move comes as a major blow to the former Bihar chief minister ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
