GUWAHATI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will address two rallies in the state next month to kick off the Congress campaign for a record fourth successive win in the assembly election amidst the strongest ever opposition from a resurgent BJP this time.
This was decided at a crucial meeting of the top brass of AICC and the party's state leadership to discuss the preparation for the assembly election in the state, due in April next year in New Delhi on Wednesday.
State Congress president Anjan Dutta said, "Rahulji will address the two rallies at Upper Assam and Lower Assam. The venue and dates have not been finalized but it will be decided after Deepawali."
Rahul will also hold meetings with the coordination committee, campaigning committee, manifesto committee and media and publicity committee separately to chalk out strategies to go about with the different roles. "He (Rahul) said that if we are mentally strong and confident, no force can stop us from winning the election for the fourth straight term," Dutta said.
A 15-member state Congress team, including chief minister Tarun Gogoi and PCC president Dutta, was closeted in the meeting with the AICC team, led by Rahul.
Buoyed by its best performance in the last Lok Sabha election when it won seven of the 14 seats from the state, BJP is expecting the Modi magic to work again and take the party to power for the first time ever in the state.
In the 126-member house in the state, BJP has just five seats against 79 of Congress followed by perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF's 18 seats. The biggest regional force Asom Gana Praishad has just 10 members.
Gogoi, in a statement issued in the evening, appealed to all secular forces to come together on a common platform and defeat the communal and divisive forces in the country "in view of growing religious intolerance allegedly perpetrated by the BJP and its fringe groups''.
Gogoi said the Bihar assembly election would be a right platform to demonstrate solidarity of secular forces to win over communal and divisive forces and urged everybody to show their allegiance to secular parties. He also urged the voters of Bihar to vote for secular parties.
