Congress sweeps Dadra and Nagar Haveli panchayat polls , Dadra and Nagar Haveli district panchayat polls,congress BJP, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, DNH panchayat polls,panchayat polls
The Congress won 14 of the 20 seats of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli district panchayat while BJP won the rest of the six. The Congress leaders celebrated their victory outside the counting centre in by burning fire crackers and distributed sweets.
The elections to 20 seats of DNH district panchayat was held on Sunday where 86.47 percent cast their votes under strict police security arrangements, which is 1.2 lakh of 1.39 lakh voters. The BJP had been in power at the DNH district panchayat for the last five years.
The election counting was carried out at Government Polytechnique college at Kharad area in DNH on Tuesday. Both Congress and BJP leaders and workers were present outside the counting centre with fire crackers, sweets and music bands.
Congress strongman Mohan Delkar was carried by supporters on their shoulders in the victory rally where they went around town thanking voters. The BJP leaders left the spot after the results had been announced.
Talking to The Indian Express, Congress leader Mohan Delkar said, “The result had come in our favour and we are thankful to the voters. The reason behind defeat of BJP is that they have gone failed in doing primary works for the people of DNH and they have not fulfilled the promises which they had given earlier during last elections. We are very much happy and satisfied with the results announced and without partiality we will work for the people of DNH. We will carry out meeting among the Congress leaders and will appoint the president of DNH district Pancahyat in coming days.”
The BJP president of DNH Digvijay Singh said, “The victory and defeat is there in all the elections, we were hopeful that our candidates would win. We will try and find out where we have gone wrong and we will work out on it, so that we would gain faith of voters again in next term.”
