JAIPUR: Chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday came out in defence of chief secretary C K Mathew, who has gone on a two-month leave after being accused of bias by the opposition BJP. Gehlot was also livid with former chief minister Vasundhara Raje for her alleged "poison" remark for the government's free medicine scheme.

"These people (BJP) have panicked and are levelling bogus allegations," the chief minister said at a press conference at the Congress party headquarters here. "A scheme that is benefitting 2.5 lakh residents in the state each day is being called poison.

She (Raje) has said so for the second time now," Gehlot said, referring to Raje's recent remark that the government was distributing medicines past their expiry dates (and, thus, a poison) under the free medicines scheme.

The chief minister alleged that the ex-CM made the remark in collusion with the MNCs she wanted to benefit. "Even the activists have condemned her for calling it poison," Gehlot said.

Defending Mathew, Gehlot said, "He has had an illustrious career of 36 years that saw different party governments in the state. Nobody pointed a finger at him all these years. But new traditions are being set in the state now.

" Without naming Raje, the chief minister said, "You have heard about the '8 pm, No CM'; now reporters are being called agents for asking questions, welfare schemes are being called handouts."

Gehlot targeted Raje on the missing antique carpets cases. "It is a serious issue. The state government has lodged police complaints about the eight carpets that went missing from government properties under their rule and were later replaced with counterfeit carpets," the chief minister said. "No body knows if they (carpets) are in London or India," Gehlot said, alluding to Raje's London stays.
