Meeting to sensitize people about upcoming elections.
JAIPUR: Rajasthan Election Watch on Friday organized a day-long public meeting on elections to sensitize people to participate in the electoral process sensibly at Udyog Maidan on Friday. The body in collaboration with different NGOs prepared a public manifesto and urged all political parties to include it in their upcoming manifestos.
Pressing the demand for political parties to come under the ambit of Right to Information Act (RTI), Nikhil Dey of Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) said, "Political parties should come under the purview of public through RTI. They should be accountable to public and must reveal their assets and funding. Even the election expense should be made public."
Dey added that every year political parties impose their manifestos on public. He said, "Political parties should respect our manifesto which reflects the feelings of the general public." The public charter has 20 demands divided into categories included education, health, child rights, guarantee employment, women rights, Dalits, tribals, nomads, minorities, youths' policy, democracy and administration, RTI, Panchayati Raj, agriculture, forest and land.
Representatives of political parties including Congress, BJP, SP and CPI were called to present their views on the public charter. All of them agreed to include all the demands before a crowd of 700 who had come from 12 districts to attend the public meeting. Dey added that they will examine the affidavits of candidates contesting elections and if they are found to have criminal credentials the body will start a campaign against them.
Janmanch passed following resolutions said that people should not cast vote to those political parties which will refuse to come under the RTI, to oppose political parties which will give tickets to taint and criminals.
"Our body will act against the parties promoting communal disharmony, casteism and gender bias in the society," said Aruna Roy, noted social activist. She added that they will also address the urban youths on such issues via different platforms including social media. "Soon we will launch a campaign on social networking sites to create the same sensitivity among the urban voters," said Roy.
