NaMo, Rahul slugging it out in Rajasthan? ,Rahul Ghanghi.
Jaipur: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi‘s September 10 rally in Jaipur will test his political clout — following his coronation as the chief of Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) election committee — and be crucial in deciding the fate of Modi’s prime ministerial dream. While the state BJP is leaving nothing to chance with regard to the rally, clear instructions have also trickled down from Modi’s office — to fetch maximum crowd so as to make the rally historic.
Interestingly, the Congress has also decided to pitch its vice president Rahul Gandhi to address people of the state a day or two after Modi’s rally. Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally in Salumbar — a tribal area — in Udaipur on September 11 or 12. With an aim to tap the popularity of Modi, the state BJP has aimed to gather at least 4 lakh people from across the state, with preparations on in full swing.
The party has selected a site in the middle of the city — Amroodon Ka Bagh, near the state assembly — so that the rally creates maximum impact and the city will be covered with banners of Modi and BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Vasundhara Raje. Party workers have also been sent invitations cards on behalf of Raje and all polling booth level workers have been issued identity cards. The party has also replaced its Yuva Morcha president Nirmal Kumawat with morcha activist Deen Dayal Kumawat — a move party leaders say is as an effort to garner more youth support.
“Nirmal was found lacking interest in morcha activities as such DD Kumawat was given new responsibility. DD is more famous among youth and he has worked at the grass root. Besides, he was in-charge of signature campaign to announce Raje as Chief Minister candidate” said a party leader who did not wish to be named. The morcha aims to gather about 70,000 youth for the rally. The party which has constituted 20 committees to look after different assignments for the rally is holding leader meetings daily and has also started door-to-door invitations.
For the past few days, Raje has been camping at her Dholpur palace and at Ranakpur town in Pali district taking feedback about the rally. She has instructed the leaders to bring minimum 10 people from every block to the rally. There are more than 46,000 blocks in the state. “The progress is satisfactory. This will be a historic rally that people will remember in coming years” claims Kali Charan Saraf, state BJP general secretary.
Since funding is a crucial aspect for any big rally, the party has directed all leaders to collect funds from their constituencies. Besides, the party has launched a drive to collect money from traders, businessmen etc. As the rally is taking place before the imposition of the Election Code of Conduct, there is no check by the Election Commission on the expenditure. The Modi-fication of the state BJP is clearly visible as the media and IT cells for the party has been spruced up. The cells are busy in preparing database of party workers, as directed by Modi and media centres have been established at the divisional level. “We are holding regular meetings with media and IT cell in-charges.
A comprehensive database is underway and it will help in multifarious ways” feels Vimal Katiyar, the state BJP media cell in-charge. After Jaipur, Modi is scheduled to address a rally at Rewari in Haryana on September 15 and a Hunkaar Rally at the Gandhi Maidan in Patna on October 27. Meanwhile, following the footsteps of his mother, AICC president Sonia Gandhi who launched a poll campaign from Baneshwar in Udaipur division in 2008, Rahul Gandhi‘s rally in Salumbar is being seen as launch of Congress’ poll campaign.
The Udaipur division has seven districts comprising of 35 constituencies. The voting pattern in the region remains a decisive factor in the fate of any political party seeking to form a government in the state. In 2008 polls, the Congress won 24 seats from this area and formed the government. In 2003, BJP had taken a lead from this division and reached the throne. Among all this, there is an impression in the state that Congress is trying to counter BJP’s political manoeuvres by replicating the saffron party’s tricks.
BJP planned Suraaj Sankalp Yatra and Congress came up with Sandesh Yatra. BJP had also planned an event to commemorate the martyrdom of Bhil tribals during British times in Mangarh but the Congress government denied them permission and held a similar programme itself. Now, when Modi is coming to address a rally in Jaipur, Rahul is also addressing a rally a day or two after Modi’s rally. State Congress spokesperson Archana Sharma, however, differs. She told the media that Sandesh yatra and all rallies were planned way ahead of the BJP plans. Sharma adds it is BJP which is replicating Congress.
