About the Constituency:

Covering the entire district of Kollam in the coastal state of Kerala is the parliamentary constituency of Kollam. It is one of the 20 Lok Sabha seats that are representative of the entire state of Kerala in the Lower House of the Parliament. The Kollam Lok Sabha Constituency (constituency number 18) consists of 1,108,686 number of electorates in totality, of these 521,619 are males and 587,067 are females as the Election commission of India 2009 data suggests.

About Kollam:

Under its jurisdiction falls the city of Kollam or Quilon as it is popularly called, that houses the administrative offices of the Kollam district. The overall population of Kollum is 26,29,703 as per the 2011 Census of India.

This city has a splendid history going back to as early as the 14th century, when rich coastal trading was harboured on this old seat port. The economy of the Kollam district primarily therefore thrives on fishing as the main trade, with over one lakh of people engaged in fishing as their daily occupation. Some of the fishing villages are Cheriazheekkal, Pandarathuruthu, Alappad and Puthenthura, along with advanced fishing mechanisms and a flourishing model fishing village being set up at Eravipuram. Kollam is famously known to be at the centre of Kerala's cashew industry.  Government undertaking industries also help in adding revenue to the economy in Kollam.
