About the Constituency:
Barmer Constituency is one of the 25 Lok Sabha constituencies of Rajasthan formed before the elections of 1957. Presently, this constituency comprises of eight Vidhan Sabha segments, of which one is reserved for the SC category. According to Election Commission of India 2009 data the total electorates in the Barmer Parliamentary constituency (constituency number 17) were 1,441,456 of which 672,200 are females and 769,256 are males.
About Barmer:
Barmer is the second largest district in Rajasthan, with its headquarters situated in the city of Barmer. Currently, it is one of the twelve districts in the state receiving grants from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme. It is located in the western part of Rajasthan as a part of the Thar Desert, sharing a common border with Pakistan. The town is situated at an elevation of 227 metres. Hindi is the official language here.
As per the census reports of 2011, Barmer town had a population of 83,517 of which 54% consists of males and the District had a sex ratio of 902 females per 1,000 males. In 2001, about 15% of the population in town was under the age of six and 76% of the total population is Hindu. The town has an average literacy rate of 66% with male and female literacy rates being 63% and 37%, respectively.
It is connected to the National Highways, NH 15 and NH 112. Barmer is known for the carved wooden furniture and hand block printing industry, woollen industries, oil, and gaur industries. Uttarlai military airbase, the first underground airbase of India, is also situated here.
