The day after the DMK pulled out of the UPA, Union Ministers Kamal Nath, P Chidambaram and Manish Tewari hold a press conference to explain the government's stand on the UN resolution against Sri Lanka and the withdrawal of its ally from the government.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram said that the UPA government has no idea why the DMK chose to withdraw support to the government as it changed its stance between the night of March 18 and morning of March 19.

He said the UPA has always supported the cause of the Sri Lankan Tamils and are trying to get justice for them for alleged atrocities committed during the civil war there.

Chidambaram also added that senior ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kamal Nath are trying to sort out the issues and get DMK chief M Karunanidhi to re-think the exit from UPA.

The minister said consultations are being held on whether there should be a parliamentary resolution on Sri Lanka.

The DMK, the UPA's nine-year-old partner in power, quit the ruling coalition on Tuesday, accusing the Centre of disregarding its demand for tough amendments to the US-sponsored draft resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

DMK leaders led by T R Baalu met President Pranab Mukherjee late on Tuesday night and submitted their letter withdrawing support to the government. Baalu said

DMK ministers would hand over their resignations to the Prime Minister on Wednesday.

''Each and everything will be discussed threadbare. Our leader Karunanidhi will advise us and we will act accordingly. We will follow his directions," Baalu said when asked about the possibility of supporting the government from outside.
