45.7% turnout in Delhi gurdwara body polls, results on March 1
DSGMC elections, Delhi gurdwara body, Bangla Sahib, Sisganj Sahib, Rakabganj Sahib, Delhi Gurdwara Act,The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee elections recorded 45.7per cent polling, a 2 per cent increase over the last election in 2013, according to the Directorate of Gurdwara Elections
Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee or DSGMC is an autonomous organisation which manages Gurudwaras in Delhi state. DSGMC also manages various educational institutions, hospitals, old age homes, libraries and other charitable institutions in Delhi. It is headquartered in Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, near Parliament House.
The polling for the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Sunday witnessed low turnout of 45.7%, but it was better than 42% recorded in the previous elections in 2013. Of the 3.8-lakh registered voters in 46 wards, only 1.75 lakh cast their vote this time. The percentage of Sikh men and women who voted on Sunday was near similar —46% females and 45.5% males.
The DSGMC has an annual budget of Rs 100 crore, a major portion of which is generated from donations at historical gurdwaras – Bangla Sahib, Sisganj Sahib and Rakabganj Sahib. Eighteen public schools run by the committee also add to its income.
In the last elections held in 2013, 43.4 per cent polling was recorded in which the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) won with a majority,” said Vikas Ahlawat, OSD to the DGE Director.
The highest polling (65.98 per cent) was recorded in ward number 7, Tri Nagar, and the lowest (26.14 per cent) in ward number 26, Santgarh.
The counting of votes will take place on March 1 at five locations — ITI, Tilak Nagar; ITI (women), Vivek Vihar; ITI, Khichripur; Aryabhat Polytechnic at GT Karnal Road and Basic Training Institute at Pusa Road.
Till 1 pm, about 20 per cent polling was recorded. Most of the polling booths were seen empty in West Punjabi Bagh, identified as one of the hyper-sensitive wards.
