Poll Methodology
- UP: Sample size of 2,011 across 80 assembly constituencies in western, central, eastern and Bundelkhand regions.
- Uttarakhand: Sample size of 895 across 30 assembly constituencies.
- unjab: Sample size of 618 across 65 assembly constituencies across Majha, Doaba and Malwa regions.
Most of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Punjab overwhelmingly support surgical strikes to deal with Pakistan-backed terror, but remain largely wary of a full-scale war with the neighbour, according to a poll by Axis-My-India for the India Today Group.

In Uttar Pradesh, as high as 90 per cent of respondents rated India's cross-LoC swoop as "very good". Another 3 percent found the measure inadequate while the remaining ticked the "don't-know" option.
Around 77 per cent of respondents in Uttarakhand and 88 per cent in Punjab also checked "very good" for the surgical strikes.
RESPONDENTS FAVOUR SURGICAL STRIKE OVER WAR
A minor three per cent of people polled in the survey in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab favoured talks with Pakistan over surgical strikes. As high as 90 per cent in Punjab and 95 per cent in UP ticked "don't know" when asked how India should deal with Pakistan and terror if not through similar operations.
Opinion was equally divided - at 40 per cent - between talks and "don't know" in Uttarakhand.
But no respondent from the three states favoured continuation of old policy toward Pakistan.
MODI EMERGED STRONGER
Around 90 per cent of respondents in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand and 79 per cent in Punjab agreed that prime minister Narendra Modi has emerged as a strong leader after the September 29 raid on PoK.
Most of the participants across the three states concurred that India was heading towards a war and most of them claimed they weren't scared of a full-blown conflict.
Yet, only two per cent of the participants from Uttar Pradesh, 20 per cent from Uttarakhand and seven per cent from Punjab favoured war as a second option over surgical strikes, the poll showed.
Asked whether India should make evidence of its PoK assault public, 76 per cent in UP, 55 per cent in Uttarakhand and 65 per cent in Punjab ticked "yes".
More than 65 percent of respondents in Uttar Pradesh and 76 per cent in Uttarakhand believed surgical strikes have helped the BJP politically. In Punjab though, the majority - 60 per cent - said they didn't.
