Congress on Saturday announced eight candidates for the forthcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, including party heavyweights and ministers in the previous UPA regime P Chidambaram and Kapil Sibal.
The party has also renominated former Union ministers Jairam Ramesh, Oscar Fernandes and Ambika Soni. The other candidates are noted lawyer Vivek Tankha from Madhya Pradesh, former Lok Sabha MP from Almora Pradeep Tamta from Uttarakhand and Chhaya Verma from Chhattisgarh, where the retiring MP, Mohsina Kidwai, was denied a renomination. Ramesh and Fernandes will be Congress candidates from Karnataka. Interestingly, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was in favour of nominating former Union minister C M Ibrahim. Former CM S M Krishna and Karnataka Mahila Congress president Laxmi Hebbalkar were also in the race. In Karnataka, the party can win a third seat with the help of Independents and smaller parties but it did not announce the third candidate. In Madhya Pradesh, the party denied renomination to AICC secretary Vijayalaxmi Sadho to give Tankha the seat. Mahila Congress chief Shobha Oza and state Congress chief Arun Yadav, too, were in the race.
