The Election Commission is set to announce the schedule for assembly elections in the five states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry soon, with polling likely to be held over a minimum 5-6 phases between mid-April and mid-May.
Sources hinted that the poll schedule may be announced in the next few days, after which the model code of conduct will come into immediate force. The terms of the state assemblies are ending between May 22 and June 5, and the EC will look to finish the poll process by mid-May, leaving a few days for government.
With the school examinations in the poll-bound states ending by early April and regional festivals/holidays like Tamil Nadu's New Year, Bihu (Assam) and Vishu (Kerala) falling in mid-April, the EC is likely to start polling sometime in the third week of April. Most of these forces will be concentrated in West Bengal, where many booths are seen as sensitive. A senior EC official said the commission will go for 100% deployment of central forces at the booth level in the TMC-ruled state.
Senior officials posted at office of Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal said on Tuesday that 100 companies of Central forces are expected to arrive in the State.
“By today about 100 companies of Central forces are expected to arrive. It may be that not all 100 companies may have arrived today. We are getting reports from the districts…. they are involved in area domination,” Dibyendu Sarkar, Additional Chief Electoral Officer said on Tuesday.

Mr. Sarkar also said that this year the EC has launched mobile-based application in Bengal to streamline the process of lodging complains and requesting for permission for various purposes by political parties.
“Whereas with application titled Samadhan voters can register complaints to EC as well as track and receive the outcome of the complaint, with Suvidha political parties can send their requests regarding rallies and vehicles to us,” he told journalists.
As per the final electoral role the number of total voters is about 6.55 crore registering a net increase of 3.23 per cent (about 20 lakh).
Among the total electorate in Bengal 3.17 per cent voters are in the age group of 18 to 19 years.
EC officials also said that the gender ratio among voters has improved.
This year among every 1,000 male voters there are 933 female voters whereas last year the figure was 925. The population to voter ratio has increased by 0.68 per cent.
The number of polling booths in the Assembly polls will be 77,247.
