Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take charge of BJP's Bihar poll battle

The BJP may be readying to ensure that it does as well in the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana later this year as it did in the recent Lok Sabha polls, but party leaders say the contest to watch out for will be the battle for Bihar next year for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will personally monitor the campaign preparations.

Although the BJP is likely to formally kick off preparations in September, it has already asked Citizens for Accountable Governance, the team of tech-savvy professionals and analysts that was involved in Modi's PM campaign, to come up with insightful data reports and assist the party's state unit in charting out a campaign strategy.

Besides, its state unit has started distributing pamphlets that proclaim "Maange Bihar BJP sarkaar (Bihar demands BJP government)". Ever since Modi's candidature for the top post prompted Nitish Kumar to break the alliance with the BJP in June last year, Modi has been determined to steer his party to success in the state where it had played second fiddle to JD(U) for 17 years.

Even as Nitish Kumar stepped down from his post following his party's debacle in the Lok Sabha polls, Modi is determined to keep up the momentum and dislodge the JD(U) government in the state, BJP leaders said on condition of anonymity.

Party members have started talking to people about the multiple failures of the JD (U) government, BJP's state unit president Mangal Pandey said that the alliance between the JD (U) and RJD would only benefit the BJP.

"Those who are angry with Lalu and have supported Nitish for years will never forgive the latter for associating with him. People here have not forgotten the jungle raj that existed during the RJD regime," Pandey said.
