Railways in Shambles, says Law Minister
Popular TV face of the BJP & Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, justified the Narendra Modi government's move to increase the rail fare by a massive 14.2 per cent saying it was a result of the policies undertaken by the previous government. While Prasad blamed the UPA II government for leaving Indian Railways in a mess, he said his government never knew that the Railways was in a mud, thanks to the Congress-led regime. Accepting that the 14.2 per cent hike may be a bit harsh on the general populace, the Law Minister said, these 'hard steps' would cause discomfort in the beginning but would ultimately benefit the people. "Railways is suffering a heavy loss daily. To give better services, there is a need of resources," Prasad Said.
People dissatisfied with PM Modi's rail fare hike move, SP stops train in protest
New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is facing criticism over the abrupt hike in rail fares. Political parties are up in arms against the fare hike and are demanding a rollback of the decision. In Allahabad,Samajwadi Party workers stopped a train in protest of the 14.2 per cent hike in rail fares. The SP workers got on to the tracks, raising flags and slogans and halted a train. Police personnel had to rush to the spot to break off the protests. CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat questioned Modi's 'achhe din' promise, saying, "We highly condemn this. This is unpresidential. It's such a crime against all the laborers who travel by train.We have urged the people to protest against the move.
Fare hike inclusive of Fuel Adjustment Component: Railways
Faced with criticism of effecting a sharp hike, the Railways clarified late in on Friday evening that the increase was only 10 per cent in passenger fare and 5 per cent in freight charges. It also insisted the hike was "as finalized by the previous government", and promised to "review" the additional burden due to oil price fluctuation if the the price of oil decreases. The ministry said in a press release that the figure of 14.2 per cent hike in passenger fare and 6.5 per cent hike in freight rates is inclusive of the Fuel Adjustment Component.
