With BSP, Congress recommending candidates, BJP yet to initiate process.
With the BSP high command already having named its candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from the city and the local Congress unit extending support to MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, it is the BJP that is still bereft of a face for the election. Instead, the trio of the senior leaders are still trying to score points over one another.
The BSP had started its campaign early with Jannat Jahan named as the party's candidate in May this year. The party has since then been holding public meetings in different parts of the city. Similarly, even though the Congress high command is yet to give its consent on his candidature, Bansal has been attending numerous functions around the city. In fact, the number of engagements have increased over the past few weeks.
BJP, however has no consensus yet on any name. With three leaders —Satya Pal Jain, Harmohan Dhawan and Sanjay Tandon— competing against each other to be ahead in the race for a party ticket. All three are holding separate programmes in different parts of the city.
Interestingly, the campaign of the youth wing of the party to enroll more members is banking on the face of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders of the youth wing are conducting their campaigns with huge posters of Modi in the background and are propagating his ideology.
The condition was similar during the visit of the party president Rajnath Singh. With no candidate to endorse, the party leaders had chosen to hail Modi during the function.
President of the Chandigarh unit of BJP Sanjay Tandon said, "Things will be done at the right time. The party high command will be taking a decision on the candidate for the elections soon. At present our campaign committees are working well. The BJP has decided on the candidate for the Prime Minister which the Congress has not. However, no one asks about this. Our candidate would be finalised in the coming weeks."
