BJP against stereotype representation of Muslims at Modi rallies.

bjp

New Delhi: Ahead of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Bhopal, the minority cell of the Bharatiya Janata Party has tried to put a veil on the skull cap controversy.

The party has issued a circular saying stereotypical representation of Muslims should be stopped. Modi had during his Sadbhavana Mission in 2012 refused to wear a skull cap offered by a Muslim cleric.

But the party is trying to reach out to Muslims and projecting its prime ministerial candidate Modi in a new avatar. Muslims seen in their traditional attire is now a regular feature in Modi's rallies and a glimpse of it was seen in Jaipur last week.

Taking a dig at BJP, Minority Affair Minister Rahman Khan said, "How do we know they are Muslims? Anybody can buy and wear caps." BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, however, said, "There is no dress code for Muslims to appear in the rallies, such kind of thinking is wrong.

All state units have been told not to indulge in showcasing Muslims at rallies." A section within the BJP feels that minority appeasement should be a tight rope walk, the party which is projecting its prime minister candidate as a pro-development hero acceptable to young India cannot sound regressive. Social scientists also feel that any such measure would be an extension of politics of majority vs minority.

Social scientist SS Jodhka said, "This is bad politics." In a re-branding exercise Modi has conducted many campaigns in Gujarat from Asmita to Sadbhavana. The challenge is for the Gujarat Chief Minister to rebuild himself from the Hindutva's poster boy to an avatar acceptable at the national level.
