BJP will get majority if Modi is named PM nominee, says his fan club.

New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP's campaign committee chief Narendra Modi may not have been able to win over all within his party but his fan base spreads far and wide beyond his state. Critics may doubt Modi's secular credentials or his ability to lead a coalition, but his fans say he's going to be the key for the BJP in the next elections.

The Narendra Modi Fan Club, which started with a few hundred ardent supporters of the Gujarat Chief Minister, today has thousands of members not just in Gujarat but across the country.

The club whose members are supporters of the BJP has always maintained that Modi should be India's Prime Minister. Rajeev Chhajer, the president of the club, is upbeat that Modi will soon be India's PM, even predicting a two-thirds majority for the BJP in the next general election if Modi is declared PM candidate.

"Under Modi's leadership, the BJP will get over 370 seats, which is a clear two-thirds majority. And it's not us, the fan club is saying this. This is in fact the mood of the nation," Chhajer said. Modi's family members, including his mother, were seen congratulating him on his recent assembly election victory, but the family is tight-lipped now.

None of Modi's brothers - Sombhai, Prahlad and Pankaj - are now willing to speak about his elevation and role. But human rights activists, who have been relentlessly targeting Modi over the past decade, especially over the 2002 riots, say Modi has polarised the BJP leadership as well.

"The very fact that he is able to polarise his own party, that there is no unanimity, that clearly indicates what is going to be in the long run should he be postured as the Prime Minister of the country," said Human Right activist Fr Cedric Prakash. Modi himself has never publicly acknowledged that he wants to be the Prime Minister. But for his ardent fans, Gujarat's leader Narendra Modi is already Prime Minister in waiting.
