Angry PM takes on BJP, says it has lost power twice in last nine years.

New Delhi:

MANMOHAN 1733f

The Rajya Sabha on Friday witnessed a rare sight when an agitated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh questioned the continuous disruptions and the conduct of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Manmohan Singh not only took on the opposition for not only insulting him, but went on to say that the opposition MPs had no respect for the institution of Parliament.

While responding to the Opposition's questions on his statement on economy the Prime Minister noted that the BJP was pushed out of power twice in the past nine years and had not allowed Parliament to function while accused him of being a thief.

An unusually angry Manmohan Singh hit out at the opposition in the Rajya Sabha for stalling Parliament and refusing to recognise the collective responsibility of the House. The Prime Minister's strong response came after the opposition MPs slammed his speech where he warned of more shocks to the economy to overcome the present crisis and asked for political consensus for more difficult reforms.

The BJP MPs hit back accusing the Prime Minister of making political statements, to which the Prime Minister replied asking, "Have you ever heard of a situation where the PM of the country is not allowed to introduce the members of his council of ministers?"

"Nowhere in the world members of Opposition walk into the well of House, and shout 'PM chor hai' (PM is a thief)," an angry Prime Minister said.

The Rajya Sabha once again saw an uproar as the Prime Minister said, "Parliament is the supreme body in our country. If Parliament is not allowed to function session after session..."

Singh hit out at the Opposition saying Parliament needs to run to build investor confidence. "If you are worried about the investor confidence, the conduct of Parliament is an important factor," Singh said.

He said corruption allegations cannot be a reason to stall Parliament even as Leader of Opposition and BJP MP Arun Jaitley accused him of "staying in power by buying MPs". "Have you heard of a democracy where a prime minister stays in power by buying votes of members of Parliament?" he asked the treasury benches.

"Corruption is there, has been there. In the recent years the RTI and various agencies have brought out certain things that are regrettable but they can't be reasons to disrupt Parliament," the Prime Minister said.
