Satara-Deolai bypoll date to be on July 30

AURANGABAD: The state election commission will conduct hearing on July 30 on the suggestions and objections raised by the citizens on two newly formed wards in Satara and Devlai. The hearing will be held in the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Research Centre here in the city.

Kishore Borde, deputy municipal commissioner, on Monday said that the commission might complete the hearings in one day and announce the election programme. He refused to share further details but said that the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is all set to conduct the polls.

Sources in the municipal corporation said that bypolls in the two municipal wards will be held in August-end. "The civic body is well-equipped to conduct the elections at any point in time. Preparations have been done well in advance and if the commission allows, we may see polls within the next twenty days," they said.

On May 19, the state government issued a notification with reference to the merger of Satara-Devlai municipal council into the 113-member AMC. With these two new wards, the total number of municipal wards in the AMC has reached 115.

In the meantime, political parties including Shiv Sena, BJP, Congress and others are gearing up for the polls. While Sena is mounting pressure on its ally in the civic body, BJP, to leave both the seats for its candidates, BJP is eyeing at least one seat.

Sources in the civic body said that Sena and BJP leaders are exploring opportunities for a pre-poll alliance but some also believe that the parties will not shy away from going it alone in the bypolls.
