Civic body likely to spend 3.5 crore on elections

AURANGABAD: The civic body elections scheduled to be held next month are likely to put a financial burden of about Rs 3.5 crore on the cash-strapped Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

A senior officer in the AMC's election department said on the condition of anonymity that the poll expenditure would be somewhere between Rs 3.5 crore and Rs 3.75 crore. "We are planning the entire programme as per the guidelines of the state election commission," he said.

Sanjay Pawar, accounts officer in the civic body, said the election expenditure in 2010 was Rs 2.25 crore. "In the previous election, there were only 99 wards, but now the number has gone up to 113. Besides, there will also be hike in honorarium paid to the officers and the employees," he said.

About 80% of the total money will be spent on honorarium, as more than 150 officers and employees of different departments in the AMC are already busy in preparation work for the elections. Besides, services of about 500-600 officers and staff will also be required on the polling and counting days.

As per the guidelines of the state election department, there should be one booth for every 10,000-12000 voters. Going by this yardstick, the civic body is planning to set up 75-80 booths across the city. Besides, the civic body is also planning to carry out counting of votes at 10 centres in the city, a move that will attract huge expenditure.
