Nov 12, 2010: Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office, Prithviraj Chavan, considered close to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, was selected as the new Maharashtra chief minister on Wednesday morning.


He was sworn in as CM of Maharashtra state on 11th of Novemeber 2010, after Ashok Chavan tendered his resignation over Adarsh housing scam. After taking charge of the state as the chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan made it clear that he would govern the state with an iron hand.

Accompanied by his deputy Ajit Pawar, who too promised good governance, Chavan said that he had been given “a big responsibility of leading the state of Maharashtra”.


The Indian National Congress selected him to be the successor of Ashok Chavan, after the latter tendered his resignation over the Adarsh Housing Society controversy. He is a Member of the Parliament of India representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He was the Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office.
He has a B.E (Hons in Mechanical Engineering) from BITS, Pilani and also a M.S. from University of California, Berkeley. He spent some time working in the field of aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US before returning to India and entering Indian politics

Chavan started his political career in 1991, and won the family seat of Karad thrice, in '91, '96 and '98 and lost it in 1999.

He was the Minister of State for the ministries of Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and in charge of Prime Minister's Office. Earlier he was also the Minister Of State in charge of the Department Of Atomic Energy.
